Our History

Our History

Hungarian School Sydney has been operating in Sydney since 1975. Originally known as Flemington Hungarian School, it has been operating under the name Hungarian School Sydney since 2019. Since 1978, our school has been a member of the NSW Community Languages Schools Association, which supports our teachers through regular educational programmes and professional development conferences. Our operations and educational programmes are overseen and administered by the Department of Education. We maintain close relationships with local Hungarian organisations and are also a member of the Association of Hungarian Educators in Australia.

One of our key priorities is to preserve and teach the Hungarian language and pass on our traditions to children growing up in Australia. Our teaching is centred on drawing from Hungary’s rich cultural heritage and creating engaging, experience-based learning opportunities.

Experience-Based Language Learning

Our qualified and experienced teachers provide engaging and enjoyable lessons for our students. Alongside language learning, we place great emphasis on exploring traditional folk
games, folk songs and folk tales, as well as preserving Hungarian traditions. Our lessons are enriched with music and arts and crafts activities related to each topic.

Our Classes

We organise our classes according to students’ ages and Hungarian language proficiency. In the primary years, our main focus is on developing vocabulary and speaking skills, as well as building the foundations of reading and writing. In the upper primary years, students explore more complex topics, with a greater emphasis on practising reading and writing.

How Our Classes Work

Classes are held at our host school. In-person lessons take place every fortnight and run for three hours. We coordinate our school calendar with the Sydney Hungarian Scouts, with whom we organise several joint activities throughout the year.

Cultural and Traditional Celebrations
programok

Our school programme includes preparing for Hungarian national holidays and traditional celebrations, as well as organising cultural activities that preserve our heritage. Students also have opportunities to perform at events for the wider Hungarian community and diplomatic representatives.

Additional Opportunities

Our students regularly participate in various competitions and programmes organised by Hungarian and Australian government bodies, as well as the Rákóczi Camp in Hungary.
These experiences help children strengthen their connection to their Hungarian roots while embracing and experiencing the values of multiculturalism in Australia.

Our Community

The Parent Committee plays a vital role in the running of our school. Its members volunteer their time to support the school through grant applications, financial management, administration and communication with parents. Events organised by the Parent Committee, such as apple picking, farm visits and the Spring Ball, also provide wonderful opportunities for students and their families to get to know one another and strengthen our school community.
